Some weeks ago Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Wout van Aert will race the Giro d'Italia. At the time Richard Plugge said no decision was taken. Now the team are responding the same way once again after rumours of an almost full Giro d'Italia lineup was shared.
This week it was said that staff within Jumbo-Visma had shared 7 out of 8 riders who were planned to go to the Giro d'Italia. This was shared across social media and spread like wildfire - although mostly with good feedback from fans. This lineup featured Wout van Aert and Matteo Jorgenson as the headliners in a team without a big leader for the overall classification - although without Olav Kooij, who is expected to be part of the lineup.
This time around it was Merijn Zeeman who responded to this rumour, in words to GCN: “We are in the brainstorming sessions and I don’t know who is making this up. Nothing is decided. No selection at all. This is a very long process. Until we discuss everything with all the coaches and all the riders, everything is on the table.”
Hence it is another denial of the words that are being passed on through social media. At this point it is almost given as a certain that Wout van Aert will be present at the Giro d'Italia, however the team has not yet united to discuss the big picture for the 2024 season. This should happen only in the upcoming weeks.
