Jonathan Castroviejo, the reigning Spanish time trial champion, talked about the
INEOS Grenadiers team's experience in the opening team time trial of the
Vuelta a Espana.
The British team was the favorite, but several problems prevented them from fighting. In the second corner Laurent de Plus crashed and Thymen Arensman went long, forcing the rest of the team to wait for him. Then Filippo Ganna, the strongest man in the specialty, punctured. This is what Castroviejo told RTVT after the race:
"We had a setback, in the second corner Laurent crashed and then Thymen went straight, then Filippo had a puncture and there were five of us, we ended up doing what we could. We wanted to win, but with this course you don't want to take too many risks with G, we went under control and there was a crash, the asphalt is dangerous. The course was very technical, with very few straights, there was no time to push ourselves".
