Madis Mihkels had a dream day in the third stage of the
Deutschland Tour. The only 20-year-old
Intermarché-Circus-Wanty rider managed to keep established names such as Danny van Poppel and Phil Bauhaus behind him in the sprint.
"I'm a little surprised. The level is very high here, but I knew that this stage suited me well," said Mihkels, who said he did not start the sprint in an ideal position. "With one kilometer to go I was still too far. I finally decided to just ride forward through the wind because I had no one with me."
"I took the risk and went after BORA-hansgrohe. Luckily I had the legs to beat them," he continued. For Mihkels it is only his second professional victory. Last year he already won a stage in the Tour of Estonia, his home race. "This is my biggest win, I am very relieved."
Tomorrow the final stage is on the program, on paper also a stage for Mihkels as the chance of a sprint is high. "We will certainly do our best. We will see. In any case, today has given me a lot of confidence," concluded the young sprinter, who started last year as a trainee with his Belgian team.
