Isaac Del Toro stuns cycling world with Tour de l'Avenir overall victory: "My coach kept telling me that if I feel good I should try it"

Isaac Del Toro won the Tour de l'Avenir on Sunday afternoon after a coup in the final stage. The Mexican managed to make up less than a minute on the American Matthew Riccitello, who eventually crossed the line almost three minutes behind the winner.

Afterwards, the 19-year-old Mexican was euphoric. "This is really insane. I was already happy with the white, to be honest. This makes me very happy and very proud. Without a doubt, this is my biggest win ever," Del Toro said in the flash interview.

Del Toro had not expected that he would take over the lead from Riccitello in the final stage. "Of course my plan was to try. My coach kept saying to me: if you feel good, then you should try it. I just didn't feel so good, but I tried anyway."

"I am really incredibly proud," concludes the Mexican overall winner of the Tour de l'Avenir. Naturally it didn't take long before first rumours of who could possibly secure the Mexican comet for 2024. As far, it seems that UAE Team Emirates seems to be in the lead, while PRT teams such as Caja Rural or TDT-Unibet have also shown some interest in the talented youngster previously.
