Lennard Kämna made a shot at completing his grand tour stage wins collection at the first mountain test of this Vuelta a España, but the German's attack was neutralized by the group of favourites in the last two kilometers.
Kämna was part of a leading group of eleven on the way to Arinsal and was the strongest climber on the final climb, but it turned out to be just not enough for the stage victory. "I managed to sneak along with the leading group in a good way and then had the right legs." That became clear on the final climb: Kämna managed to ride his last companion Damiano Caruso out of the wheel.
However, the danger came from the behind as in the group of favorites, UAE Emirates pushed hard with just four kilometers to go. This turned out to be the sporting death blow for Kämna. "So it didn't work out today, but yes... Sometimes you win in cycling and sometimes you lose."
"On the final climb there was a headwind and so it was a matter of waiting for the right moment. At one point I started, but it was not enough," he concludes in conversation with the organization of the Vuelta.
