Inaugural edition of Figueira Champions Classic goes to Casper Pedersen with a selective sprint win

Casper Pedersen, The 26 years old Dane that is one of the new signs of Soudal-Quick-Step for this season starts the season winning the Figueira Champions Classic in a selective sprint finish. Pedersen managed to take the leadout of EF Education-EasyPost and beat their sprinter Marijn Van Den Berg.

The race started with a breakaway of 8 riders from local teams being caught around 70 km to the finish. At around 40 kms a dangerous breakaway was formed with breakaway specialists Remi Cavagna (Soudal-Quick-Step), Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), young talented riders Oscar Onley (Team DSM), Mathias Vacek (Trek-Segafredo), Eritrean Champion Merhawi Kudus (EF Education EasyPost) and Classics specialist Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceunick).

EF Education-EasyPost did an amazing pursuit work and catch the remaining attackers Cavagna and Herregodts. Due to that all ended in a selective sprint finish with EF Education doing the leadout to his sprinter Marijn Van Den Berg who was one of the few fast man that survived the climbs.

Casper Pedersen (Soudal-Quick-Step) won ahead of Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and Marijn Van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) becoming the inaugural winner of Figueira Champions Classic.
