"I would buy him a beer if he finished in the top five" - How Mathieu van der Poel missed out on a bet at the World Championships

Mathieu van der Poel has won the road race World Championships, at the XCO Worlds he had the opportunity to win one more rainbow jersey and a bet, but having crashed out he did not manage to win a beer from a teammate.

Axel Laurance, victor of the under-23 men's road race World Championships, entered a bet with the Dutchman, in which he'd buy him a beer if he finished on the Top5 of the Mountain Biking event.

That was initially misunderstood, the Frenchman posted on Twitter clearing out the bet: "Correction: I would buy him a beer if he finished in the top five in mountain biking. He thought that was very generous, but I intended to buy the cheapest beer," he wrote.

Teammates at Alpecin-Deceuninck, the two clicked but van der Poel did not ultimately deliver. He crashed out of the race in the first lap having slid out in the final corner, suffering minor injuries to the face which saw him withdraw.
