Remco Evenepoel was the man to beat for the final time-trial of the Tour de Suisse, despite the big competition. He looked very good early on in his effort, however he found someone who was stronger on the day as Juan Ayuso stormed to victory.
"I'm second here three times, third once and third in the general classification. Then you just have to be satisfied. I woke up this morning with the greatest motivation to win, but my competitors were super strong," he admits. The yellow jersey seemed possible, but both Ayuso and Skjelmose put in storming times on the 25-kilometer effort.
Possibly not Evenepoel's best time-trial, he reveals that "I also found it difficult to go from high speed to low speed there and find the right cadence.” He was faster than his rivals over the flat section of the ascent but then suffered and lost time in the uphill part of the time-trial.
“I went a little too fast to the climb. That cost me strength." Sure enough he was far from his best in the climbs this week, and on this occasion he missed out on the stage win. Having won yesterday's stage, he accomplished a goal this week. However, his effort still earned him a spot in the final podium as Felix Gall struggled a lot more on the day.
Regarding the national championships, he replies with the expected difficulty he'll have to battle with Wout van Aert for the title in the time-trial. “Racing against Wout, I'm looking forward to it. After that I also drive the road race."
"We will fill in my summer program at altitude in Val di Fassa," he concluded, he will use that time in altitude to prepare for the World Championships. Afterwards, it is not yet certain what the Belgian will target after the goal of the Giro d'Italia dissolved due to a Covid-19 case.
