Juan Ayuso has evolved quite a lot in the time-trial discipline, and once again he put that quality into display, winning the final stage of the Tour de Suisse today. However it didn't come as a big moment of happiness for him, as the overall classification narrowly skipped through his fingers.
"I have mixed feelings. On the one hand I am happy with the stage victory. It's my second victory in a time trial this season, so I'm happy with the improvement in this discipline," Ayuso said following what was his third win of the season. "On the other hand, the overall victory was the main goal and I came in second, which is a bit of a shame. However, Mattias was super strong and I can only congratulate him."
Ayuso flew up the final climb, and he won the stage taking 8 seconds on Remco Evenepoel and 9 on Mattias Skjelmose. It was a display of tremendous power, and promise with his confirmation as a time-trial specialist, but the GC win was his main goal for the day. "I would have liked to dedicate the overall victory to Gino.
"But the stage victory is also nice, this one is for him. Racing is a side issue at the moment, you don't have the urge to celebrate a victory. Everyone here has done their best for Gino. I'm sure Mattias is thinking of him now and dedicating the overall victory to him. I am happy to be able to honor him with this stage victory," he concluded. After an altitude camp it's unlikely that he will stop racing once again, however it is unconfirmed if he will return to the Vuelta a Espana or following a different schedule over the coming weeks.
