Simone Petilli ends his valiant breakaway with 3rd place in Campo Imperatore ❤️🥉 #Giro 📸 @cyclingmedia_ag
Simone Petilli seemed the strongest of the breakaway in the final stretch of the ascent to Gran Sasso after the incredible move that he starred in together with Karel Vacek and the eventual winner of the stage Davide Bais.
For many kilometres he was the virtual leader of the Giro d'Italia, something he sought, but which was ultimately not possible. "Since the start of the Giro I had thought about the pink jersey, I knew it was very difficult, the DSM didn't think I'd lose it, to a certain extent I was able to get it, but in the end it wasn't possible."
The Italian from the Intermarché-Circus-Wanty , who attacked a couple of times without success in the final kilometers, believes that he was too generous in the break and that this ended his chances of victory:
"I think that I have worked too much on the break, that has made me lose the chances of victory. They let us go from the beginning, I thought that we were going to be more."
