On what had been expected to be a day when the general classification battle at the Giro d'Italia really exploded, Davide Bais took a breakaway stage win for his first career victory.
Entering the finale over three minutes ahead of the peloton, Bais and his breakaway companions, Simone Petilli and Karel Vacek had plenty of time to play out a tactical battle as a sprint finish was set to decide the stage.
With Vacek on the front, Petilli was the first to make a potentially race-winning attack. Sadly for the Italian though he just didn't have the legs and EOLO-Kometa's Davide Bais was able to come around and take the first victory of his career.
