Remco Evenepoel is meticulously preparing for his
Tour de France debut. It's not a surprise that ambitious Belgian champion doesn't intend to 'just participate'. Sporza reports that has already reconed multiple stages of the Grande Boucle without the attention of public.
"I hear from colleagues that Remco is feeling very good. He also enjoys the little things during training. A coffee stop is almost a regular occurrence during his training trips on camp. But make no mistake, Remco remains a training animal who does not shy away from hard work."
"When a colleague of mine left his driveway by car on Christmas Eve, he suddenly saw a rider approaching in black equipment. The rider was wearing a helmet with the Belgian champion colors. It was Remco. At 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve. He had put some extra lighting on his racing bike because it was already dark. Remco had ridden 200 kilometers that day. Talk about dedication."
"I also heard from Romain Bardet that Remco had already explored a lot of Tour stages without anyone knowing anything about it. Many may think that Remco doesn't stand a chance at the Tour against Vingegaard and Pogacar. But he is meticulously working on his Tour debut. And if Remco has something on his mind..."
He's actually said on video that he was going to do this..so this is a non-story and sensationalising
Yeah, also the crap about dedication, there are probably lesser paid guys who work mostly for others who train just as hard and there are many non-paid amateurs that probably train harder and are more dedicated, especially amongst the Ultra crowd. I know one guy who does about 60km just about every weekday to go to work, all year no matter what the weather except when there’s black ice as he has to leave around 5am, so pitch black and often minus 5, 10 even 15C. Then at least 3-4/week a 2h lunch ride and most days also the 60k ride home before the weekend programme. That’s what it takes to have a chance of winning RAAM, Transsiberian or doing 24h records (over 900km at around 40km/h).
Amateurs, with f-t jobs, that have no teams or staff and have to look for sponsors themselves as the costs are too high. No prize money. THAT is dedication, not sure it’s sane or healthy but you can’t deny the dedication or discipline.
Your friend isn't gonna do very well at RAAM if he's training so little.
*Training hard is easy. The best are toeing the line of overtraining. If they train more, they'll be overtrained and will get worse
Sorry you think that way, you obviously also misinterpreted what I said, he already did the race and came second. He also broke (one of the) 24h records and has won numerous endurance races such as Tour of Austria and one in Italy. I think he knows what he’s doing!
You can’t do 5000km in 8-9 days if you don’t do the km in training. I didn’t say anything about the speed at which he trained, 80-90% at 30-34km/h, far below racing speed that I indicated (obviously not during RAAM where the best don’t actually sleep more than half an hour a day.
