"I have always loved coming to South Australia and enjoying the warm reception from fans. The chance to kick start the season in an event I'm now familiar with is a great bonus," Thomas said in anticipation for the first World Tour event of the year.

Stuart O'Grady is also fond of the former Tour de France winner's presence in the race. "We know there will be plenty of fans keen for another glimpse of the star rider, and we are confident he'll put in a strong performance".
This will be Thomas' final season in the peloton, after turning professional in 2007. He's seen several generations go by but maintained a strong level throughout his career and up until today he's been able to fit in very well with the demands of being a top rider.
Thomas has previously raced the Australian race in 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and finally 2023. It is an unusual race for Grand Tour riders to start their season taking into consideration the time zone changes which effectively end up making a difference when returning to Europe; but also the much different weather found in Australia when comparing to how Europe is during the winter months.
