During his professional career,
Leonardo Basso spent four seasons riding in the colours of Team Sky / the
INEOS Grenadiers. Now retired, the 30-year-old Italian has returned to the team ahead of the 2025 season as one of the sports directors following the recent performance staff overhaul.
"Already as a rider, I had taken the three Italian levels to become DS. Then at the end of 2023 I went to Switzerland to get my UCI licence," Basso explains of his choice to stay in the sport following retirement, in conversation with
Bici Pro. "The return with INEOS, albeit in the team car, came during the season that just ended. The team contacted me in July and asked if I would like to do some freelance experience. I accepted immediately, and coming back to this team was a great pleasure, as was being confirmed for the coming season."
It's been well reported that INEOS have somewhat slipped down the ranks of the peloton over recent seasons, but Basso is hopeful he can play his part in helping to rebuild the team to their past glories. "Even as a rider I studied race tactics and talked a lot with the sports directors . Once I got into the car I immediately felt at ease," he explains. "The approach I had at the end of last season was never that of an old-fashioned sports director, one who makes decisions and does it by force. Now the role is more varied, it has different facets. Not least that of helping athletes through dialogue."
"I have a sensitivity that allows me to see certain things, and thanks to the fact that I was a rider until 12 months ago I can have a fresher outlook. I know what it means to be a cyclist now," he continues. "I know what it means to be part of the team, having that rider DNA has definitely given me a plus. Sport is made of cycles, as football and basketball teach, which begin and end. If you want to get back on the crest of the wave you have to keep your identity strong, look in one direction and follow a certain path."
For the INEOS Grenadiers, re-finding that DNA will be key, Basso believes. "The pursuit of excellence, which they have been doing since they were born in 2010. Trying to win through development and innovation," he concludes. "I am someone who listens, I think it is fundamental in high-level sports. If you know how to do it, you understand the problems and find room for work and growth. I think I am also a person with common sense, educated and prepared."
