On stage 4 of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes, Yara Kastelijn was a solo winner from the breakaway. Coming home over a minute later, Demi Vollering crossed the line with her arms aloft in celebration, not realising she hadn't won the stage.
“I had no idea, so I just celebrated," the Team SD Worx superstar admits in her post-stage interview with NOS. "I don't know. I thought there was someone else in front of me, but I wasn't sure. At that moment you no longer get any communication, they didn't know anything in the car either."
Finishing in second, Vollering added what could be some very important bonus seconds. The Dutchwoman also now sits second in the general classification, only behind her teammate, Lotte Kopecky.
“It was a painful battle. Today was a really long stage and also very hard. It was so debilitating that no one could really make a difference anymore. In the end I was able to pass it on the final piece and I'm happy with that," says Vollering. "They let Lotte ride and were only focused on me unfortunately. That was a pity. In the end I think we made the best of it as a team."
