"I don't know much more about it" - Romain Bardet tells slight memory loss after Tour de France crash

Romain Bardet rode in the breakaway of the Clásica San Sebastián as he returned to the peloton, he talks about the hard crash he suffered at the Tour de France where he had a concussion.

"I'm happy to be back in the race. It was important to move on after the Tour, close the chapter and put that bad memory behind me," Bardet said in a post-race interview with L'Équipe. "My teammate Stan Dewulf told me about it. For example, I do remember that I had attacked in the descent and was caught up by three or four other boys not much later."

On the 14th stage of the race the Frenchman crashed out only minutes after a mass pile-up which neutralized the race, he was one of many victims on that day, and abandoned the Tour whilst sitting in 12th spot.

"In a dangerous corner my front wheel slipped and I fell headfirst. I don't know much more about it. My first memory is when our team leader (DS, ed.) came to see me. I have the impression that it took an eternity between my fall and the moment I started to argue again. I'm glad everything is back to normal."

However Bardet was not too positive on his experience, he admits: "Even without a crash and in full health I couldn't have done much more. So I'm under no illusions about what I could have done. Show fighting spirit and ride at the front? Yes. But winning a stage was impossible. What's especially hard is that I sacrificed months for nothing. Besides, I didn't have any fun on the bike."
