SD Worx team leader Danny Stam was taken out of the race after the tumultuous fifth stage in the Tour de France Femmes due to an accumulation of matters: dangerous overtaking and inappropriate statements were mainly to blame. Nevertheless, he remained with the team and played a crucial role in GC success of Lotte Kopecky, he explains to Het Nieuwsblad.
"I didn't expect Kopecky to do so well before the Tour," Stam honestly tells the Belgian newspaper. Kopecky was close to taking it easy in the legendary Tourmalet stage, where she eventually managed to hang on for a long time. "At one point Lotte asked me if she could spare herself for the time trial, because she thought she might win it. Then I talked her out of it and told her not to forget the standings, because she could be in the top three," says Stam.
"She's in such good shape. I'm glad it turned out that way," the Belgian breathes a sigh of relief. "Sometimes the puzzle pieces just fall into place. Lotte has been with us for two years now. Last year it took a bit of getting used to. This year she has fueled a lot of confidence. I also think that she is very happy in the team," Stam answers when asked how it is possible that Kopecky is still in top form after a great spring and is competing with the best in all areas.
How does Stam estimate Kopecky's chances on the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow? "Ninety percent, I think. She won't make last year's mistake again."
