The penultimate day of the Criterium du Dauphiné was a brutal one and Team Visma | Lease a Bike brought the race to Tadej Pogacar. However the Slovenian was able to resist every test and in the end, Jonas Vingegaard had to settle with a second place once again.
Visma had Matteo Jorgenson on the attack in two occasions in the first climbs of the day, and Sepp Kuss was also in the breakaway, creating the looming threat of an attack from the Dane. All of this was in hopes of making the stage as difficult as possible and burn Pogacar out.
The plan was set and executed, but the truth is the World Champion was in another undefeatable day and Vingegaard's strong legs on the day still wouldn't be enough to match the Slovenian.
In the final climb, Pogacar went all-out early on once again, and Vingegaard couldn't match him. “But when he attacked, I tried to follow, but it quickly became clear that I had to slow down,” the Dane said in a post-race interview. The gap didn't grow as dramatically as the day before, but Vingegaard wouldn't be able to close it down.
“I may not have been able to follow, but to be honest I think I did well. I found my own pace and didn’t lose much at the end. I can be happy with how it went. I can see my values and they were very good. Tadej was better again and deserves it.”
Vingegaard seems to be on the right path, but it simultaneously appears as if his chances of winning the Tour depend more on what may happen to Pogacar. “I still hope that this race will help me to improve, so that I am better in the Tour than I am now. But at the moment I have to say: Tadej was the strongest yesterday and today too. Congratulations to him.”
