Over the last five editions, Annemiek van Vleuten has finished on the Top4 of Amstel Gold Race four times and has finished on the podium on three occasions. Still, in her home country, the veteran looks to take a win in one of the few main classics she hasn't yet, in what is her last chance.
“When I woke up this morning, I thought: how early! But then I immediately thought: I shouldn't think that, because it's my last. Time to shine," van Vleuten said at the start line this morning to L1. "It will not necessarily be fun, because races always come with some pressure, you want to perform. The enjoyment might come more if I did the touring version next year. But it does make me extra motivated.”
It is a race that suits some of her rivals better, but the Movistar rider continues to be a brutal climber. Although they are short, there will be plenty opportunities to do some damage and van Vleuten knows that: “I have always come up with a plan, but I always have to race with my heart. It's not a very tight plan either."
"That is not possible here either, because there is not one moment where I think: I have to go there. If there were a ten minute climb or the Camerig for example, I would think: there I go. Now they are all just a bit too short climbs, so I have to rely on the course a bit and choose the right moment," she concluded.
