Gorka Izagirre calls time on professional career after 17 seasons in the peloton

For 17 seasons now, the figure of Gorka Izagirre has been a familiar sight in the peloton but after the vastly experienced Spaniard completes the upcoming Tour of Guangxi in China, it will be time to hang up the cycling shoes for the final time 37-year-old.

Having added 9 victories to his palmares over the years, Izagirre can reflect fondly upon notable successes such as a stage of the 2017 Giro d'Italia, the Spanish national championships road race back in 2018 and most recently, Gran Trittico Lombardo in 2020.

Over the course of his time in the peloton, Izagirre is probably best known for the six years spent in the colours of Movistar Team over two separate spells. Having also turned out for the likes of Euskaltel - Euskadi (2010 - 2013), Bahrain Merida (2018), Astana Qazaqstan Team (2019 - 2020) and most recently Cofidis, where he reunited with brother Ion Izagirre, the Spaniard has enjoyed a very long and fruitful career competing at the highest level.

As mentioned though, Izagirre isn't completely finished just yet. Although he has raced on European roads for the final time at Paris - Tours last week, the 37-year-old is still set to travel with Cofidis for the upcoming Tour of Guangxi in China, starting on the 15th of October.
