Former pro rider Dan Craven his launching his own bike brand, with it's headquarters in his hometown of Omaruru, in Namibia. Throughout the last decade, Craven has been one of the most prominent African riders and was a highly charismatic figure in the peloton, and after retiring in 2017 he's now developing a steel frame brand, locally manufactured.
In a Twitter post, Craven has officially announced the launch of his new bike brand Onguza Bicycles. It is a steel frame brand made in Namibia by two builders for now, Craven has explained that the country has a lot of "talented makers stuck in low-value jobs" and that this is an opportunity for some to make good use of their talent.
Despite having made a solid career with several wins as a pro, including six national championship titles. He had wondered "what was the point of becoming a pro in the first place? Did it matter? What can I do now? What must I do now?" Sure enough he had the answer, and a project that has been in the making for years is now public.
A sentence that very much summarizes this project is one that Craven has used in one of his posts: "Does the world really need another bicycle brand? No. But my hometown, Omaruru, does."
