Although good news have emerged from the
Bahrain - Victorious camp, yesterday was a very unsettling day in the cycling world. Current European champion and Paris-Roubaix winner
Sonny Colbrelli collapsed after the finish on the first stage of the Volta a Catalunya, and was in need of immediate medical support in order to be stabilized.
Colbrelli is in good spirits and talked to Italian media today. In a small interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian gave an update on how he's feeling: “I’m here in the hospital, resting, I don’t remember anything. Only that I crossed the line, I stopped, I took the water and I collapsed. Then the emptiness, and I woke up in the hospital." he said.
Colbrelli was on his first day of racing since recovering from a bronchitis. Whether that illness had an effect on him or not is a question yet unanswered, but on the road he looked in good form as he fought for the stage win, finishing second behind Michael Matthews. A few minutes later shouts for medical support were heard ahead of the finish line, and the situation was very complicated at times as medical staff had to use a defibrillator in order to revert the situation.
Colbrelli is currently hospitalized in Girona's university hospital. He is undergoing medical tests in an effort to understand the cause of the incident, where he will stay until further indication: “Now I’m here, they keep me monitored. It was a great scare, but I am already thinking about when I will be able to return to the group.“
