After a disappointing Tour de Suisse for Enric Mas, especially because it was his big challenge to see what his form was before leading Movistar Team in the Tour de France, the Balearic rider will not race again until the arrival of the Grande Boucle. That is to say, he will not attend the Spanish national championships.
The news has been confirmed by colleagues at Diario de Navarra. The plan is for Mas to regain his 100% form to be ready on June 29 for the Tour's Grand Départ, which this year will be held in Firenze. The decision seems to be the wisest considering how poorly Enric Mas performed in the high mountains of Switzerland.
The Movistar Team rider came to the Swiss race with the condition of favorite, or at least to get out of there having finished in the top 3 of the general classification, since he was going to face the gregarious of the leaders with whom he will have to compete in the Tour de France. But nothing could be further from the truth. The Spaniard finished his race in 7th position, a result too low for him, which was aggravated by a final time trial that left him even more marked, finishing even behind his teammate Pelayo Sanchez.
Movistar offers you its confidence.
But even so, Movistar Team knows that it has no choice but to continue trusting in its rider less than two weeks before the start of the Tour. At the end of the day, although his form is not encouraging, Enric Mas is still the best card, by far, of the telephone team to fight for the general classification of a grand tour. That is why from within the ranks of the Spanish team, in statements collected by Relevo, they have decided to send a message of calm and confidence about Mas' next performance in the Grande Boucle.
"We are calm because we know that his physical condition is good. His preparation has not been the most intense because we are also thinking about the Vuelta a Espana, in addition to the Tour de France," they explain at Movistar Team. "To be very happy we should have finished in the Top 3 or 4th (in the Tour de Suisse). But we were aware that he was going to lack spark in the limit situations."
"Suisse has been a special race, the Tour will be another story. We had many stages 'unipuerto' and some short and explosive day (the stage of 42 km with high finish, shortened by the weather conditions, which did not suit Mas). In the end they were details that in such a specific race end up being noticed," concluded the telephone team.
