Danny van Poppel is a rider that has received several yellow cards this season and today he won stage 3 of the
Deutschland Tour in a reduced group sprint, but in a very dangerous one.
Soren Waerenskjold has stayed in the race lead despite Jhonatan Narváez having taken it from him at a point during the stage.
Marco Haller, Jannik Steimle and Enzo Leijnse formed the day's breakaway on this important stage where the final attacks on the overall classification were expected. Rightfully so, we've seen a few moves and hard pace throughout the day which saw the likes of Jonathan Milan and Phil Bauhaus get dropped, whilst Kaden Groves abandoned the race. The stage, expected to finish in a sprint, saw a very fast pace which meant the bonus seconds would be available in the late bonus sprint, and a bunch finish wouldn't be happening in Kassel.
The breakaway was caught with 83 kilometers to go, and from there on the pace just did not slow down. There was a very furious leadout to the final hilltop with 3 kilometers to go. It was an uphill technical sprint where Jhonatan Narváez overtook race leader Soren Waerenksjold in the very last meters, tying them on time but seeing the UAE rider jump into the provisional lead. Waerenskjold attacked right after but Wout van Aert closed down the attack and took the head of the peloton, keeping the rac in check for Matthew Brennan.
Van Aert did a perfect leadout work into the uphill sprint where Danny van Poppel topped the competition to take a win. His sprint however was very disruptive of Matthew Brennan, and his win could be taken away from him. Soren Waerenskjold crossed the line in second place, taking back the race lead, whilst Emilien Jeannière sprinted to third.
Update
As expected, Danny van Poppel was disqualified after the sprint. Soren Waerenskjold was named as the stage winner, increasing the race lead over the competition.
