Enric Mas has taken time off all his rivals in the fight for the red jersey of the Vuelta a España. Movistar Team completed a great team time trial, without incident, and missed out on the win by mere hundredths of a second. In fact, Enric even celebrated the victory when he crossed the finish line in Barcelona, but the fifth rider of the Spanish team came in a few tenths behind DSM, which prevented the victory.
Despite not getting the victory, the Mallorcan was very happy with the result obtained and for having been able to take some time off his main rivals. He was, as always, a bit sparing with his words, although he made it clear that he was happy with the result obtained: "The main thing was not to fall, I think we have done very well because we have not risked, little by little we are going to get into the race."
INEOS Grenadiers lost Laurens de Plus, UAE saw João Almeida shed time, and Jumbo-Visma lost time waiting for Jonas Vingegaard after a puncture. Remco Evenepoel and Soudal - Quick-Step did quite well at the end of the day but the Belgian launched very harsh criticism over the conditions the riders faced.
Mas was possible one of the few overall classification riders happy with the outcome of a difficult opening day. "Sincerely, we are very happy, a great morale boost. We'll draw conclusions when we get there, but we're happy," he concluded.
