"We took some risks, but we had a good capital plan" - Lorenzo Milesi shocked to put on red jersey at the Vuelta a Espana

21-year old Lorenzo Milesi is having the time of his life. Just a few weeks after winning the under-23 time-trial World Championships, he led a victorious Team DSM-Firmenich to win the team time-trial and take on the race lead.

“No, I didn't expect this. It feels great. It's good for the whole team. This was very emotional," the Italian said in a post-race interview. "It was tougher than the World Championships." The Dutch team departed early in the day and benefited from that, managing to hold off all rival teams, including Movistar Team who had it's fifth rider finish less than one second slower than DSM's.

“We took some risks, but we had a good capital plan. We stuck to that, and it worked well. We are very happy with this victory”, he said. Milesi's lead is not one that is likely to be held for long, however it is an achievement that not only came as a shock but it also marks his young career.

Whilst Romain Bardet is unlikely to aim for the overall classification, this time will likely benefit Max Poole if he tries, but one of Milesi's teammates may be taking over the race lead after tomorrow's hilly finale in Barcelona.
