Enric Mas crashed on the descent of the Alto de Vivero in the final part of the first stage of the Tour de France and had to abandon the race. Movistar Team has confirmed that he suffers a fracture in his right scapula, which caused him to abandon the race. He was taken to hospital after his withdrawal, where he has rested overnight:
"Enric suffers a right scapula fracture, without displacement. Superficial abrasions in arms and legs. He remains in observation by hospital protocol for monitoring of evolution during the next hours," Movistar wrote after the stage. The crash also led Richard Carapaz to abandon the race with a fractured kneecap, inflicting heavy damage on the race's GC fight.
The Mallorcan, for his part, also wanted to send a positive message to his followers through his Twitter account, assuring that he will return and wishing his Movistar Team teammates the best of luck in the Tour ahead:
"It hasn't been the start of @LeTour that I had imagined, but things don't always go the way we want. I want to wish all the luck in the world to my teammates in the 20 opportunities ahead Movistar Team Eskerrikasko Bilbo! You are a 10 crowd and it is a luxury to be able to enjoy your roads year after year. See you soon".
