Stage 4 of the
Tour de France Femmes was another day for the sprinters and the woman to beat did not disappoint.
Lorena Wiebes had a complicated finale without much of a leadout, but she had the speed to beat the competition in what was an exciting green-yellow jersey fight for victory.
The route from Saumur to Poitiers was flat and suited the same riders as the previous day. Hence we expected a similar scenario, with
Team SD Worx - ProTime being the team with the responsibility to chase throughout the day.
The start of the stage saw several riders attack individually and trail ahead of the peloton by themselves, but eventually all were caught in an effort that didn't seem too logic. Eventually Franziska Koch and Ana Vitória Magalhães made a move and formed the actual breakaway of the day, one which did actually threaten the peloton throughout the day as the duo managed to maintain a high speed together
They were caught only inside the final 4 kilometers, around the same time as the leadout battle begun. Most teams struggled to have women in the final leadout but in the end it would make very little difference as the same head figures of stage 3 delivered again. Green jersey Lorena Wiebes launched her sprint and rode to another victory, even if yellow jersey
Marianne Vos did come closer this time around to match her. Lara Gillespie finished a strong third.
