Stage 3 of the 2024 Tour de France sees the sprinters get their first chance at glory in this year's edition of the race. Amongst the favourites for the day, will be the newly crowned Dutch national champion, Dylan Groenewegen.
The Team Jayco AlUla sprinter has become one of the most talked about riders of the day already on stage 3 and not for his performances on bike either. The Dutchman has sent the cycling world into a frenzy by taking to the start line with a Batman-esque nose guard, with curiosity spreading like wildfire as to why Groenewegen is wearing such a piece.
"Those who have a large schnozzle sometimes get a little bit of glare if it starts to bead up [sweat] on the end of your nose," claims Eurosport commentator Carlton Kirby, looking to explain the potential reasoning behind Groenewegen's facial addition.
"Surely not," laughs Kirby's co-commentator and former Olympic gold medalist, Dani Rowe however. "Come on... It's got to be some sort of aero gain."
"I won't say I'm a fan of it but it's a bit Dark Knight, Batman mask," added one of the Tour de France's greatest ever sprinter, Robbie McEwen, a 12-time stage winner at the Grand Boucle, with three Green Jersey wins under his belt.
Surely if Groenewegen wins the stage 3 bunch sprint, we will see the nose guards everywhere before too long. Take a look at the item in question down below and let us know what you think about it!
