After a few anxious weeks, it seems as if a resolution has been reached between the Dutch cycling union (KNWU) and the Dutch police after issues around policing numbers had threatened the future of many Dutch races in 2023.
"Every year there is a consultation between the police and the KNWU about the agenda. There seemed to be gaps there this year," said Minister Helder on Thursday. "There were some unexpected things in the elaboration of the agreements, which had to be discussed. But the police have expressed the expectation that it can be realized. Let's assume that the cycling agenda can continue, as discussed."
Despite expressing their pleasant surprise at the minister's announcement, KNWU are yet to be fully convinced about the long term future of cycling in the country. "The minister has heard our cry for help about the reduced use of police motards in cycling races," say the organisation on their official social media page. "Of course we are pleased that the House has heard our cry for help, but we are still concerned about the long term."
"Among other things, we have made a proposal for a pilot with motorcycle support teams," the statement continues. "We will discuss this in mid-April with NOC*NSF and the Ministries of Justice and Security, Infrastructure and Water Management, and Public Health, Welfare and Sport."
