Mark Cavendish has on several occasions been at the brink of ending his career as a pro rider. Now, that he has finally achieved the record-breaking 35th victory at the Tour de France, his main career goal has been accomplished. But this does not necessarily mean he will retire and it still remains possible that he will race in 2025.
It is reported by Wielerflits that the case for the 'Manx Missile' remains open. He had been close to hanging up the wheels in 2020 but was salvaged by Soudal - Quick-Step the next season, where he got several stage wins at the Tour and came close to the record. In 2022 he didn't take part in the race and his career looked to be ending once again, as he had moved to the French B&B Hotels team that disbanded right before the start of the season.
He moved to Astana Qazaqstan Team in 2023, took a stage win at the Giro d'Italia that inspired confidence in a return to the top step at the Tour, but after announcing his retirement, he crashed out of the Tour and after months of consideration, decided to postpone his retirement. In 2024 he did not have the best of seasons until he reached the Tour, where in one of the first opportunities he snatched a stage win and made history in the race.
He didn't contest any other sprint in the race, and ever since the finale of the Tour he hasn't raced again. Likely, that will remain the case until the end of the season. The Dutch news outlet informs that he is indeed training once again, but that his future is uncertain. Through interviews with Alexandr Vinokourov and Mark Renshaw, it is possible to assess that he could potentially sign for another year with the team as a rider, a possible mentor role for a new sprinter in the team, or even as a team ambassador such as the role of Alejandro Valverde at Movistar. In the coming weeks we should learn what Cavendish's next step in the cycling world will be.
