Team Visma | Lease a Bike cannot catch a break. After the serious injuries of Jonas Vingegaard, Wout van Aert and Wilco Kelderman this spring; the team's Grand Tour plans continue to be affected. Christophe Laporte started the Giro d'Italia as a replacement from van Aert, but has now also abandoned with injuries.
This is because of the crash that happened on stage 5. The European Champion had just led out Olav Kooij into an intermediate sprint when he hit road infrastructure and lost control of the bike. Although he suffered no fractures, it led to a lot of road rash and it was a meaningful impact at high speed.
The Frenchman continued the race despite that and concluded two more full days of racing. Yesterday's time-trial day provided an opportunity to recover a bit more; but this morning the Dutch team confirmed the departure of Laporte.
"Unfortunately we have to report that Christophe Laporte will not start today," the team wrote on it's social media pages. "He never fully recovered after his crash in stage 5. Together with the team, it was decided to take the necessary rest. Get well soon, champ."
