Thibau Nys has had a terrific start to the season but has since struggled with inconsistency. Whilst he is no longer complaining about back pain, he admits that he struggles in the courses with sand, but is putting his focus on the national championships.
"I really had a terrible day. I was a complete mess, particularly when it comes to my technical skills," Nys shared with In de Leiderstrui after the race in Koksijde. "I couldn't ride any of the sandy sections properly. Then you know it's going to be tough. Physically, it wasn't always great either, but I try not to focus too much on that. This cyclocross race is just very specific. For now, I don't perform well in such races. It's mainly related to my skills on sand. Apparently, those are disastrous."
However the 20th spot was not reflective of his form, which is slightly better than that of the last months of 2023. "In Baal, we could see that I am in good shape. I take it race by race." Hence, Nys is still hopeful of finding good form, even if not the same that earned him victories in Waterloo and Koppenberg earlier in the winter.
"For me, it's just about starting in the best possible form, no matter where I race. And then we'll see what's possible," he tells. However, he does have Meulebeke as a clear goal. "With the form from Koksijde, it will be tough at the Nationals, but with the form from Baal, I can compete for the title. I assume that I will prove this in the upcoming races."
