Wout Poels flushed his non-selection for the Giro d'Italia this afternoon with a stage victory in the final stage of Tour de Hongrie. However, the Bahrain - Victorious leader did meet some ups and downs on Sunday, before he was able to enjoy the sweet taste of victory.
"I was suffering a lot," he admits in the flash interview. "I was on a small gap the whole time, but I could ride at my own pace. Fortunately, things leveled off a bit in the last 150 meters, so I was able to take the victory."
Although Poels also showed himself to be remarkably aggressive earlier in the stage. "On the second last climb I tried to force it to separate the group a bit more. That didn't really work, so I decided to save all my energy for the ending."
"It was a fantastic atmosphere with all the people along the way, it is very nice to be able to end the Tour de Hongrie with a stage victory," Poels concludes his story.
