Another day of precious experience for
Isaac Del Toro. The leader of the
Tour Down Under got through what was a calm day in the peloton, and will go into the decisive weekend ahead of the competition.
"I'm happy. Saturday will be tough, but I'm happy to still be in the jersey," Del Toro said in a post-race interview. "On days like this I don't want to take too much risk, because the next two days are important to me. We succeeded. Willunga Hill is a nice climb and I hope I feel good, so hopefully I do."
According to GCN's Matilda Price, the Mexican said that he purposefully dropped back from the peloton inside the final 10 kilometers so as to then accelerate and put in some intensity before tomorrow's key stage. Perhaps a risky strategy as the pace increased in the peloton, but the 20-year old arrived safely in the peloton.
Going into the queen stage of the race, the
UAE Team Emirates rider has 1 second over Biniam Girmay and 2 over Corbin Strong. He's got an 11-second buffer over most of his rivals in the fight for the overall classification, a small gap but one that can see him on the defensive over the upcoming day of racing.
