Volta ao Algarve profiles 2025 to feature a climbing time-trial! Portuguese early-season race to provide thrilling test up Alto do Malhão

The profiles of the 2025 Volta ao Algarve was released this afternoon by the organization, and ahead of us is another exciting edition with an interesting surprise - the race will end with a time trial that will finish at Alto do Malhão.

Overall, the race maintains the same structure as in recent years, one that has proved very effective in attracting many of the main stars of the international peloton. The sprinters and classics riders in particular have a chance here to pick up some wins and work towards the spring, while the climbers and time trialists always have their opportunities too.

We'll have this situation again next year. The five stages have been confirmed and this time we'll have a total of three sprint finishes, corresponding to the ends of stages 1 (Lagos), 3 (Tavira) and 4 (Faro).

Stage 2 will have the same finish that we've become accustomed to recently, with Alto da Fóia at the end of the stage, a climb that will create important differences in the battle for the general classification. This, however, will be decided in the final 19-kilometer time trial. This will start in Salir and end at the top of the climb that has marked the race in recent years.

Last year's race was won by Remco Evenepoel, who took the overall lead in the time trial but was matched and beaten by Daniel Martínez of Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe in both summit finishes. As we reported earlier this week, João Almeida is the first big headliner to confirm his presence in the race and will be a main favourite to win the overall classification. More are expected in the coming months.
