Video: Volta a Portugal peloton gets blasted with water due to extreme heat

The Volta a Portugal, often taking place in the interior of the country and in the height of summer, is frequently a race that is harshly hit by the heat. This year is no exception, with some unusual alternatives used to combat it.

A video shared by the race's social media page shows a fireman splashing the peloton with water from a fire truck as it rode by a small town. With the temperatures in Castelo Branco - today's finishing city - reaching as high as 36 degrees it was a well welcomed situation, something that's likely to be seen often over the coming week as the temperatures will remain close to 40 degrees in a large portion of the country.

Stage two was won by João Matias in a tricky bunch sprint, with tomorrow's stage seeing the riders go up to the Serra da Estrela for the first high mountain stage in what is usually a decisive day at the race.
