Jumbo-Visma, soon to be Team Visma | Lease a Bike, and Primoz Roglic are splitting ways. However, before that happens, the Dutch team have made a long tribute video with words from the man himself, as well as many of the highlights of his successful career.
"We have grown together. We have all learned a lot. We have grown so quickly in just a few years and it has created great memories. And when you have fun, the years go by even faster. They are memories forever. Things also went less well. I fell many times and it was painful. But I always tried to look ahead positively. And if you keep fighting, the reward will always come. I am proud of what I have achieved. It's time for new challenges."
“We will forever look back with pleasure on what he meant to us," Merijn Zeeman, team DS, recalls. "I received a call from a friend of mine in 2015 and he said: 'I have a ski jumper for sale, one who can cycle very fast.' Then I immediately informed my colleagues. We tested it and we were immediately convinced: He has a Ferrari engine. We must have that." The Dutch team struck a deal that was brilliant. Three Vuelta a Espana wins, a Giro d'Italia, an Olympic title, Li´ège-Bastogne-Liège and dozens of World Tour - and more - wins made the Slovenian one of the generation's best riders. The team split as he looks for sole leadership elsewhere, but not with bad relations, and the long tribute video is a display of the mutual affection.
"A rider like him only comes around once every twenty or thirty years. He, but also Dylan Groenewegen, are the basis of the successful team that we are today. Roglic is a founder. It wouldn't have been possible without him." Roglic leaves for BORA - hansgrohe where he will be leading the team, and aiming for the Tour de France victory that is missing in his palmarès.
