Ketones have been made relatively famous in cycling, a substance that has been in use for a few years, which some teams complain about as it may be harmful to health.
Alpecin-Deceuninck partners up with a company in search of performance gains. The likes of Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen may benefit from this.
“As a medical team, our main mission is to protect the health of our riders. The nutrition strategy is a very important issue in our health and recovery program. According to recent sport scientific findings, implementing ketones in the recovery nutrition, helps the recovery process and lowers the chronic inflammation and oxidative stress," team doctor Peter Lagrou said in a press release. "Both are very important in the prevention of illness, injuries, overuse, mental and cognitive fatigue. This partnership perfectly contributes to our medical mission.”
The substance is in use throughout a few World Tour teams, but is equally criticized by others. For some, it is argued that it is a form of doping, however there are no limitations on it's use in the current situation. A move that may be seen as controversial by some, however one that the team feels is beneficial.
“deltaG is thrilled to announce a milestone partnership with Alpecin-Deceuninck," the company's chief strategy officer Brian McMahon added. "This collaboration allows us to support an organization we believe is on a path to continued success, both in performance and reputation. We are excited to formalize this relationship and share the news with the world."
