Ion Izagirre, Spanish rider of the Cofidis team, launched a brutal attack on the decisive pass of stage 12 of the Tour de France that only Mathieu van der Poel tried to follow. The Dutchman, however, was unable to keep up with the Spaniard and ended up sitting down and without strength.
Izagirre kept the pace at the head of the race and was able to solo up the pass. The former Spanish champion showed his enormous strength on the hardest climb of a very tough stage, and the gap he obtained was enough to survive all the way to the line as he brought in Cofidis' second win of the race.
