The chaotic fifth stage of this year's Giro d'Italia wrote many stories. While many discussions centered around the debatable tactics of Alpecin-Deceuninck who haven't made many friends on Wednesday, the four up front wrote their own history.
The 25-year-old Andrea Pietrobon was no exception. The Polti Kometa rider has never been as close as that day to win a professional race. Precisely 100 meters short of achieving this feat after a desperate last kilometer solo attempt.
The younger brother of team manager, Alberto Contador - himself two-time winner of Giro d'Italia - was one of the two commentators for Spanish Eurosport for that stage. And it'd be an understatement to say he was on the edge of his seat in the final kilometer.
The Spaniard was emotively cheering for his personal favourite in the front group, repeatedly screaming "Go, Pietrobon" in the broadcast, jumping around the studio and falling into despair when it became clear Benjamin Thomas and Michael Valgren would pass the Italian in final hundred meters.
