Five race days under his belt this season and two monument wins already, Mathieu van der Poel will soon turn his attention to the next monument on the calendar, Liège-Bastogne-Liège. With Tadej Pogacar also set to start in Belgium, it's sure to be must watch.
What are the chances of van der Poel being able to live with Pogacar though? Well according to the winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège back in 1992, the best the world champion can hope for is second place. "He will be there in Liège, but as second fiddle," the 63-year-old Belgian states firmly on the cycling talk show, Café Koers.
"Next week in the Amstel Gold Race, he will be number one, but not the following week," De Wolf continues bluntly. "Van der Poel will sprint for second place like Quinten Hermans two years ago. One and a half minutes from Pogacar."
Just why is De Wolf so sure though? "If Pogacar rides full throttle from bottom to top on La Redoute or Roche-aux-Faucons, Mathieu is one minute behind at the top. Simple," he explains. "Pogacar is now preparing perfectly. Mathieu is in a state of euphoria. He will demonstrate again next week for hundreds of thousands of fellow countrymen."
Why would he raced only for silver medal? He can just eat Betty Crocker's frozen meals alone, instead :-)
MVP won't even get second ! It's a climbers race and he's to heavy for this monument.
He’s just about the same weight/height as WVA (better at climbing for sure). Yes it’s easier for climbers to win but look at recent podiums, no guarantees, WVA, Kwia, Hirschi, Jungels, Schachmann, none of them are really considered climbers and as I said elsewhere, I have a sneaky suspicion MvdP moved to Spain not only for the weather but to practice this weakness. If so, with a fit team he could manage a lot of uphill damage control. We will see, I’m not expecting him to win but Lance didn’t say anything meaningful, can contend does not mean beat.
Also, let's not write off Roglic's chances. He should have recovered from his injuries by then. Pogacar certainly has the strongest team with Ayuso and Almedia both in the line up.
Hope they did not get injured while doing so... I pick TP any day. But, as always MDVD cannot be rule out. Pogacar 55-45 Van der Poel seems much better to me
Hmm, very simplistic No consideration of teams. Assuming they’re one on one all the way from then All based on past average performances, doesn’t seem to have noticed MvdP is doing everything at 1-2km/h average higher speed with much in solo so I doubt he’s not improved his climbing, especially now he’s enjoying living in Spain always close to climbs (might have been another part of his motivation). I still favour TP but it’s not so clear cut, 2/3 - 1/3 sounds reasonable. Who’s the other expert? Addition: looking more and more silly to speak of experts here when you quote one and have one other article on the subject with another expert who has a very different opinion. I use the word expert very loosely here, more like people given a platform.
