Mattias Skjelmose is part of Trek - Segafredo's large Danish contingent, and the American team took no time to announce the renewal of one of it's brightest talents, who is expected to rise up the ranks in the coming years.
“What can I say? I already enjoyed my first years with the team and for me it was not really a choice. I couldn’t see myself continuing anywhere else,” Skjelmose said in a press release. “The team already showed a lot of trust in me, and I really want to return the trust by renewing my contract".
Having turned pro last year, Skjelmose is a product of the team's development ranks. Having finished sixth in the 2021 UAE Tour - his second race as a pro - he showed immediate talent as a stage-racer. He's backed those ambitions this year with podium positions at the Tour de la Provence, Tour de Wallonie and the Tour de l'Ain, coming repeatedly close to his first pro win aswell in the process, at the age of just 21.
"I don’t think I could perform so well in another team, and I don’t expect to have the same opportunities elsewhere. When you arrive in this team you’re told that it’s one big family, and a lot of guys say this, but you find out quickly that here it really is true, and I want to share my achievements with this family," he said. Sure enough Trek have done a great job in securing it's leaders, and the environment within the team seems to be beneficial for the development of talents like Skjelmose.
Although several riders in his generation already fight for the victory at Grand Tours, the Dane is confident that he will reach that level, but with time. “I’ve had some ups and downs along the way, but mostly ups luckily. I still see myself competing for Grand Tours in the future..."
"Hopefully, I can take some wins in the future. I’ve been close a lot of times now and I want to show the team that I’m also a winner," he concluded.
