Stage 5 of the Tour of Turkey ended up in another bunch sprint, with fast speeds and tight roads making it very chaotic. In this scenario, Tobias Lund Andresen of Team DSM - Firmenich PostNL took his second victory in a row this week.
The breakaway of the day was made out of seven riders who looked to prevent a sprint from happening. Mauro Verwilt, Oliver Mattheis, Antonio Polga, Genki Yamamoto, Jacob Scott, Konrad Czabok and Michal Pomorski made up the group.
Astana Qazaqstan Team and BORA - hansgrohe kept the gap under control, with occasional support from Polti - Kometa who looked to make the race harder in some of the uphill sections. A sprint was rather inevitable however at the end of the day.
The final survivors of the breakaway were caught with just under 5 kilometers to go. Polti pushed the pace on the final hilltop to try and put some of the pure sprinters under difficulty.
It was a very fast and dangerous finish in the peloton with twists and turns and a narrow road inside the final kilometer. In the absolute chaos it was Danny van Poppel who launched his sprint early but it turned out to be too early of a move. Race leader Tobias Lund Andresen was looking to leadout Fabio Jakobsen but followed the wheel of the Australian and managed to have the best sprint at the end of the day.
He beat his own teammate Fabio Jakobsen to second place on the day, a double celebration; whilst Portugues Iuri Leitão sprinted to third place.
