Matej Mohoric won stage 5 of the Renewi Tour in a late attack, taking the victory whilst Tim Wellens confirmed the overall classification on a day where the riders protested the dangerous finale.
The day started off already with a strong and threatening breakaway of nine riders including the likes of Luke Plapp and Derek Gee but after going through the finish line for the first time there was an interesting event.
The riders stopped in protest of the dangerous final kilometers, and talks with race organizers led to an agreement where there wouldn't be bonifications in the finale of the stage and green kilometers, with times being taken at the base of the final hilltop.
Plenty attacks took place in the hilly final circuit with several groups going up the road at different moments. A group of 16 riders formed at the head of the race late in the day, including Tim Wellens who went on to confirm the overall win with his efforts.
As for the stage win plenty attacks took place in the final meters. Five riders dislodged from the rest of the group inside the final kilometer, and a tense sprint followed between them.
Matej Mohoric took a strong win to complete the race in fashion, beating Matteo Trentin and Soren Kragh Andersen to the line.
