Santiago Buitrago has become the first Colombian cyclist in history to get a podium in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The Bahrain Victorious rider finished third in one of cycling's great classics, although he admits that he didn't have a good feeling at the beginning of the race and that the leader was Mikel Landa:
"I'm very happy with this podium in my first monument. I come from the Tour of the Alps, it was a very strange race, the leader was Mikel, finishing third is very important for me". So, despite not finding the best sensations in the first part of the race, he ended up finding his legs in the decisive stretch.
"Halfway through the race I wasn't feeling well. I was telling the team that I didn't feel good. I wasn't planning to finish and at the end when I pushed a little bit my legs responded".
Buitrago says goodbye, explaining his final sprint and the big goal he has after the well-deserved rest he will now take:
"The one from [EF] Education surprised us, he attacked from far away, I knew that Pidcock was faster, I tried to surprise, but in the end I had to keep the third position. The goal will be the Giro d'Italia, I've been preparing very well, this motivates me, I want to improve what I did last year, now I want to enjoy this third place, this podium so nice".
