“The first I read about it was in the news" - Sepp Kuss reveals Jumbo-Visma riders kept in the dark over 'Super League' rumours despite Richard Plugge being one of the spearheads

Talks of a much-rumoured Cycling 'Super League' have really ramped up over the last week with reports of Saudi Arabian investment and talks from important figures within the sport of a need for change.

One man who is supposedly spearheading the new 'Super League' proposal is the boss of Jumbo-Visma, Richard Plugge. Despite this, one of his team's star riders and the recent winner of the Vuelta a Espana, Sepp Kuss has revealed he had no idea about any such talks and explained how he first found out his team were signed up for a Super League through the news reports.

“I think it goes both ways, I think it is exciting and good for the sport that it modernises in a way, or become more franchised,” the American tells GCN from the Tour de France Prudential Singapore Criterium. “But at the same time, cycling is very nuanced and there is a lot of history, there are a lot of smaller races and it’s hard to have it both ways."

"Where you have a big calendar with all these historic races - or smaller races - but you also have to keep the fan engagement and keep everything concise,” he continues before concluding with confirmation that he's not heard any discussion from within the Jumbo-Visma team. “The first I read about it was in the news.”
