According to Reuters, five top cycling teams, including Ineos and Jumbo-Visma, are in talks to set up an alternative cycling competition. The intention is to break the power of big players such as ASO and get more money flowing to the teams.
Cycling teams have been complaining for years about the current model, in which a limited amount of organisers seizes all the control over races organisation and subsequent profits (e.g. from TV rights) flow right into their own pockets.
In an attempt to divide the cake - in their view - more fairly, 5 top teams (Ineos and Jumbo-Visma are certainly mentioned) have put their heads together. The plan is to use an alternative competition to put existing and new competitions on one calendar.
According to the insiders that Reuters was able to speak to, it is far from certain whether a new "Super League" will actually be created. In 2012, several teams joined forces for the Cycling World Series, but that eventually never saw the day of light.
