Fernando Gaviria was the only major sprinter at the last Giro d'Italia not to take a stage victory. Jonathan Milan, Michael Matthews, Kaden Groves, Mads Pedersen, Pascal Ackerman, Alberto Dainese and Mark Cavendish won. But the rider from La Ceja could not manage to raise his arms.
Movistar Team's star sprinter finished the corsa rosa with a fifth place, a sixth and two sevenths. Undoubtedly a very modest performance for one of the big bets of the Spanish team this season. Gaviria looked strong, but the pressure got the better of him. He rushed in the couple of stages in which he arrived with options.
Gaviria's poor performance has not gone unnoticed in the Colombian press, where they have been harsh with him and have recalled the words of his former boss at UAE Team Emirates Joxean Fernandez Matxin, who said that Fernando was not the cyclist who worked the hardest and that mentally he was not strong:
"Fernando is really a great talent, he is in my eyes one of the best sprinters in the world. The problem is that his work ethic is a five or a six. He starts competitions when his level is at an eight, while for others - through super professional training - he is a nine, a ten, an eleven or a twelve. He really needs to change something mentally. He has to do something with his motivation, to bring his level back up. I already know him well from our collaboration at Quick-Step and I also helped him in his move to UAE Emirates, but he really needs to change his approach."
It's been four years since Fernando Gaviria won his last stage in a grand tour and 6 since he fascinated the world at the 2017 Giro d'Italia with 4 victories. As of today that rider is a long way off, will he be able to come back.
