No upsets in the opening edition of
Copenhagen Sprint as the world's fastest woman
Lorena Wiebes successfully confirmed her status in the streets of Denmark's capital.
"It feels fantastic to win this first edition," she said afterwards. "The spectators in Denmark were incredible. In every town there were fans cheering us on, and those laps through the city centre with all those people on the sidelines made it very special."
The final of the stage was once again marked by a crash that Wiebes blames UCI for, especially after their controversial rulechange on handlebar width: "I am a bit irritated that the UCI wants to do all sorts of things with the handlebars and such, but does not think about our safety in the race."
"It was a beautiful race, but sometimes it was also dangerous. That is why I am a bit irritated. Sometimes it was really dangerous, because there was no one who indicated where there were traffic islands."
It caused a crash, which saw Wiebes' teammate Blanka Vas involved. "She was part of the lead-out and so we had to adjust that, but it worked out well. I just hope that the UCI will pay more attention to our safety next time."
